Up Next

Up Next is a queue of what you want to read or hear next. There is one queue, for reading and listening alike, and it syncs to all your devices. Line up a few articles on your Mac in the morning, then press Listen on your iPhone in the car, and the player goes through them in order.

When you finish a link, it leaves the queue, and the next one is ready.

There is a way to queue a link almost everywhere you see one.

While savingTurn on Add to Up Next in the share sheet, or check it in the Safari or Chrome popup. See Saving Links.
ShortcutsThe Add to Up Next action, or the Add to Up Next option of Save to Bindle. See Shortcuts, Widgets, and Focus.

A swipe, the Up Next button, Q, and Add to Up Next all put a link at the end of the queue, and take it out again when it is already queued. Queue Next moves a link to the front, even if it is already somewhere in the queue.

Books don't go in Up Next. Their chapters already lead from one to the next.

The Up Next widget shows the queue on your Home Screen or desktop, with Listen to start it and a check mark to finish a link. See Up Next Widget.

The Up Next List

Where to find it: iPhone: Up Next in the bar at the top of the Links tab. On iPad and the Mac, Up Next in the sidebar, under Unread, or Library > Up Next (Command-7).

Up Next shows your queue in order, numbered from 1, with no day headings, whatever sort you use elsewhere. At its top:

  • How much is queued, how long it takes to listen to, and when listening from the top would end, such as "4 links · 3 hr, 20 min · ends about 9:40 PM". Times are listening times at the speed you chose in the player. They count only links whose offline copy says how long they are; when a link's length isn't known yet, it says "ends after" instead.
  • Listen, which reads the queue aloud from the top, one link after another, in the player. It starts at the first link that can be read aloud.
  • Read, which opens the first link in the reader. When you reach its end, the reader offers the next one.

With nothing queued, Up Next says "Nothing up next".

As a List

Up Next reads like a programme, the same in the list and the cards. Under the heading Now, with how many links are queued and when they end, the link that plays now is a large card with its picture, title, and site, with Listen to All and Read under it. In the list view, the rest follow under the heading Then, numbered from 2, each with its site and length and, at the right, the time it starts if you listen from the top, such as 8:06 PM. To move a link to the front, choose Queue Next in its menu.

As Cards

In the card view, Now, the first link's card, and Listen to All and Read are as in the list. The rest follow under Then in rows, left to right, each with its number and the time it starts on its picture, such as "2 · 8:06 PM".

Change the Order

  • In the list: drag a link up or down to move it. iPhone and iPad: Choose Edit first to show the handles.
  • In the cards: drag a card over the others. A dashed space, such as "Drop to queue 3rd", shows where it will land. The numbers after it move down to make room.
  • In any view: a queued link's menu has Move Up and Move Down, and Queue Next moves it to the front.

To add a link at a particular spot, drag it in from another app and drop it between two links. It is saved and lands where you drop it. Links in the Up Next list can't be dragged out to other apps, because a drag there moves them. Cards can still be dragged into another app.

Take a Link Out

  • iPhone and iPad: Swipe left. In this list a full swipe takes the link out of the queue, rather than deleting it.
  • Choose Remove from Up Next in its menu or details, tap its filled Up Next button, or press Q.

Taking a link out of Up Next doesn't change anything else about it.

Listening Through the Queue

When the player finishes an article, it moves on to the next queued link that can be read aloud, and keeps playing. The finished link leaves the queue. If the player was showing, it stays, now showing the new article. When the queue is empty, the player stops at the end of the article.

The player shows one quiet line under its controls: Up Next, and the title of what plays next. Tap it, or the Up Next button at the top of the player, to see the queue over the player. There you can:

  • Tap a link to listen to it now.
  • Swipe a link to take it out.
  • Drag to change the order (iPhone and iPad: after choosing Edit).
  • Choose Done to go back to the player.

The link playing now is marked with a moving waveform. Links that can't be read aloud are left out of this view, because the player skips them. See Listening.

Up Next Audio

With a natural voice, the player has to work out the sound of each sentence as it plays, and that uses battery. So while your device charges, Bindle reads your whole Up Next queue ahead of time in the voice you've chosen and keeps the sound on the device. When you listen later, away from the charger, the player plays what was made ahead instead of working it out again. You do nothing to turn this on.

  • It covers queued articles that have an offline copy. Any other article's audio is made when you ask, or as you listen. See Prepare an Article's Audio. A book's audio is prepared when you ask. See Prepare a Book's Audio.
  • On iPhone and iPad it runs while the device charges, in the background too when the system gives Bindle time. The Mac does it whenever Bindle is open. Up Next audio, in Settings > Listening > Audio ahead of time, chooses when. See Audio Ahead of Time.
  • A link shows a red ring beside its offline mark while its audio is being made. The ring fills as it goes, with the percent made beside it. A link that stopped part way shows the same ring in gray, and a link whose audio is all ready shows a filled gray waveform circle.
  • While it works, the activity capsule shows how far along it is, such as "Preparing audio: 42%, article 2 of 5".
  • It pauses while anything is being read aloud, and while the device is hot or in Low Power Mode.
  • It keeps up to 500 MB, shared with the articles you prepare or listen to. When it needs more, audio kept from listening goes first, then the queued links furthest down, and articles you prepared go last. Audio for links that leave the queue is removed, unless you prepared it.
  • It is made for your voice and speed. 1.25x and faster share the same audio; 1x and 0.8x each need their own. After you change either, the player reads live until the next charge makes it again.
  • Voices, Storage shows the space it takes as Article Audio, and Delete All Article Audio deletes it, or Saved Audio deletes one at a time. Up Next's is made again the next time the device charges.

Up Next audio stays on the device it was made on. It never syncs.

Reading Through the Queue

At the end of every article, the reader shows a card for what comes next: the next link in Up Next when there is one, else the next unread. Archive and Read Next archives the article and opens it; Keep and Read Next only opens it. See The End of an Article in Reading.

The reader's More menu has Queue Next, Queue Last (or Remove from Up Next), and Show Up Next, which shows the queue over the article. Tap a link there to open it in the reader.

You don't have to start from the Up Next list. Open any article, and when you finish it, the reader still offers the front of the queue.

A link leaves Up Next on its own when:

  • the player reads it to the end, or
  • you read past 90% of it in the reader, which is also when Bindle marks it read.

It leaves the queue even if you had read it before.

Archive When Finished

To archive what you finish, too, use the two settings in Settings > Reading > Reader. "Archive when finished reading" archives a link once you read past 90% of it. "Archive when finished listening" archives it once you listen to its end, so you can archive what you hear and keep what you read, or the other way around. While Bindle reads an article aloud, only the listening setting archives it. Both are set on each device. A book is archived this way only when you listen to its end.

Archived Links in the Queue

Archiving a queued link doesn't take it out of Up Next. It keeps its place, hidden, and waits. Unarchive it and it is back where it was.

On Every Device

The queue and its order sync like everything else, so the order you set on one device is the order on all of them once they meet. If two devices each move links while apart, they agree on one order when they sync.

On a device with a Focus that narrows the library to one collection or tag, the Up Next list shows only the queued links in that Focus. Moving one still lands it between the right links in the whole queue.
