Organizing
You don't have to organize anything in Bindle. New links go to the top, and search finds the rest. When you want more order, Bindle has tags, stars, an archive, collections, reminders, and places, and two ways to bring old links back to mind: Rediscover and Random Article.
Everything in this chapter syncs to all your devices, unless it says otherwise.
Tags
A tag is a word you attach to a link, such as recipes or work. A link can have any number of tags.
Add tags:
- When you save: the Add Link sheet, the share sheet, and the browser popups each have a Tags field. Separate tags with commas.
- In a link's details: choose Add Tag, type, and press Return. Bindle suggests tags you already use as you type.
- From suggestions: where Apple Intelligence runs and "Summarize links and suggest tags" is on, a link's details suggest tags for it. Tap one to add it, or its x to dismiss it. Nothing is tagged without you.
- By dropping: on iPad and the Mac, drop a link from another app on a tag in the sidebar.
Remove a tag: tap the x on its chip in the link's details.
See a tag's links: tap the tag in a link's details. On iPad and the Mac, choose it in the sidebar's Tags section, which lists every tag you use with its count, most used first. iPhone: A chip above the list shows the tag; tap it to see all links again.
Star, Archive, and Read
Star
Star the links you want to keep in sight. Starred links show a star, and the Starred filter (Command-3) lists them, archived or not.
Star from a link's details, its menu, a swipe to the right, the hover buttons on a card, the reader, or the S key.
Archive
Archive a link when you're done with it. It leaves All and Unread and waits in Archived (Command-4). Nothing is lost: it keeps its notes, tags, and highlights, and you can unarchive it any time. Saving an archived page again brings it back out.
Archive from details, the menu, a swipe to the left, the hover buttons, the reader and its end card, or the A key. An archive box carries the link away, with Undo for a few seconds. See Your Library.
Read and Unread
A new link is unread, with a dot beside it. It counts as read:
- once you have read 90% of it in the reader (or played 90% of a video), or
- as soon as you open it in your browser, since Bindle can't see how far you read there.
Just opening an article in the reader doesn't mark it. Listening and speed reading count, as does scrolling. Restoring your place, or jumping to a place another device reached, doesn't: Bindle marks what you actually read.
To change it yourself, choose Mark as Read or Mark as Unread in details, the menu, or the reader's More menu, swipe right, or press R in the list. If you mark an article unread while reading it, Bindle leaves it unread until you close it.
Marking a link read clears its one-time reminders. Repeating ones stay.
Collections
A collection gathers links under a name. There are two kinds:
| Kind | How links get in |
|---|---|
| Smart | Rules you set, such as "unread links tagged work from the last 30 days". It updates itself as links change. |
| Manual | You add each link by hand. A link can be in as many manual collections as you like. |
Either kind can sit inside another collection, like folders: Work, then Research inside it.
Where Collections Live
- iPhone: The Collections tab. Reminders, Nearby, and Dead Links come first, then your collections, indented under the ones they sit in, each with a count and a short summary of its rules. Swipe a collection left for Delete and Edit.
- On iPad and the Mac, the sidebar's Collections section, and the Collections screen at the top of the sidebar, which lists them the same way.
A collection's context menu has Edit, New Collection Inside, Remind Me, and Delete.
Make a Collection
- Choose New Collection: the + in Collections, or Library > New Collection (Shift-Command-N).
- Or turn what you're looking at into one. When a filter, a tag, or a search is showing, choose Save as Collection in the Add (+) menu, or Library > Save as Collection. The new collection starts with those rules and a suggested name.
- Or choose Add to Collection > New Collection in a link's menu, to start a manual collection holding that link.
The New Collection sheet:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Name | The collection's name. Save stays dimmed until it has one. |
| Kind | Smart or Manual. Only a new collection chooses; an existing one keeps its kind. |
| Inside | Another collection to sit in, or Nothing (top level). |
A smart collection adds its rules:
| Rule | Choices |
|---|---|
| Contains | Links, Books, or Links and Books. Collections made before books could join hold links. |
| Links | All, Unread, Starred, Archived, or Up Next. |
| Saved | Any time, Last day, Last 7 days, Last 30 days, or Last 90 days. |
| Site | A site, like github.com. Its subdomains match too. Bindle suggests your most saved sites. |
| Words to search for | Words to find, with the same search as the search field. |
| Tags | Turn on each tag to match. With more than one: Any tag or All tags. |
Matches shows how many links fit the rules, with a summary of them underneath. With search words, the count leaves the words out, so the collection may end up holding fewer links.
To change a collection later, choose Edit. Its sheet adds Places (see Places and Nearby) and Delete Collection.
To keep a lasting record of a collection's pages, turn on Save PDF and Screenshot of These Pages. The setting syncs, and each device keeps a PDF and screenshot of every link in the collection. See PDF and Screenshot.
Fill a Manual Collection
Choose Add to Collection in a link's menu or in its details under More. It lists your manual collections, with a checkmark on the ones the link is in. Choose one to put the link in, or to take it out. New Collection starts a new one holding the link.
While you look at a manual collection, a link's menu also has Remove from, followed by the collection's name.
Inside a Collection
A collection's list works like the library: the same layouts, sort, menus, and swipes. Collections inside it show as cards at the top. Tap one to open it.
The toolbar adds New Collection Inside, and Remind Me, for a reminder to read what's unread there.
Delete a Collection
Choose Delete, then confirm "Delete this collection on all devices? Its links stay." The links aren't touched, and any collections inside it move up a level.
Read By
A read-by date says when you mean to have read a link. It syncs to all your devices.
Set one: in a link's menu, choose Read By, then Tomorrow, This Weekend, Next Week, or In 2 Weeks. Each shows the day it picks. This Weekend is the coming Sunday, Next Week is the Friday of next week, and In 2 Weeks is two weeks from today. Choose Custom to pick any day on a calendar, then Set. In a link's details, Read By is in the More menu.
What you see: under a row's byline, "read by tomorrow", "read by Monday", or "read by Oct 30" in italic. Once the day has passed, it says "overdue since Tuesday" in red with an hourglass. On a grid card, a small label at the top says "By tomorrow", or "Overdue" in red. Only unread links that aren't archived show a date.
Clear it: choose Read By, then Clear Date.
New saves: to give every new save a date, open Settings > Reading > Read By and Digest and choose what new saves get: no date, a week, two weeks, or a month. This is for this device only. Saving a link you already have keeps the date it had.
The Read By filter lists unread links with a date, soonest first, under Overdue, This week, and Later. See Filtering.
When a date passes: by default nothing happens. In Settings > Reading > Read By and Digest, change "leave the link be" to "move it to the archive", and unread links go to the archive once their date has passed. A note says "Archived 2 overdue links", with Undo. A link moved this way loses its date, so one you bring back doesn't go again. This is for this device only.
The Daily Digest
Once a day, at a time you choose, Bindle can offer a few unread links that fit the minutes you have, in one notification: "You have 15 minutes", then the links with how long each takes.
Turn it on: in Settings > Reading > Read By and Digest, under The digest, tap the time and the minutes in the sentence "Every morning at 8:00 AM, offer me about 15 minutes of reading", then turn on Daily digest. These settings apply to all your devices: turn it on once and it comes on every iPhone, iPad, and Mac in your circle. Each device asks to send notifications the first time. Below the switch, a line says what the next digest would hold.
What it picks: links due soonest first, then the rest of Up Next in order, then the oldest saved, as many as fit. A link you have started counts only the minutes left. Bindle knows how long a link takes once any of your devices has an offline copy of it; a link no device has a copy of is skipped. A link that's due but too long for your minutes is named on the digest's page, so you know it's waiting.
Open it: tap the notification. The morning's reading shows the date, how many minutes, the first link with its picture, and the rest below. Read in Order and Listen to All put the links at the front of Up Next and start, so each goes on to the next.
Get back to it: for the rest of the day, the top of Links (All) and of the Read By list show Today's digest on every device, whether or not you saw the notification there, with its links as rows in the list or as cards in the grid. A link you archive leaves it, and once you've archived them all, Today's digest goes away. Choose Read the Digest to open the morning's reading again. Tap the heading to fold the section to just its heading, and tap it again to open it; this device remembers.
The same everywhere: the first of your devices to reach the time makes the day's digest, and the others show that one once they sync. Two devices that each made one before they met settle on the earlier one.
Start Fresh
When the unread pile has got away from you, declare bankruptcy: send it to the archive in one go. Nothing is deleted.
Open Settings > Reading > Read By and Digest, then Declare Bankruptcy. Choose Everything unread, Older than a week, or Older than a month; each shows how many links it would archive. Starred links and links in Up Next stay, and highlights and notes stay with each link. Then choose Archive.
A note says how many went, with Undo. Until you declare bankruptcy again, Settings > Reading > Read By and Digest also shows Bring Back Last Bankruptcy, which brings that whole batch back.
Reminders
A reminder brings a link, or a whole collection, back to your attention: at a time, when you arrive at or leave a place, or when you're with one of your other devices. A link or collection can have several reminders.
Where to find it: Remind Me (a bell) in a link's details, its menu, and the reader's More menu; in a collection's menu and its list's toolbar. Once a link has a reminder, the button shows it, such as "Reminder: Tomorrow 9 AM".
The first time you set a reminder, Bindle asks to send notifications.
At a Time
The Remind Me menu offers ready-made times, each showing when it will be:
| Choice | When |
|---|---|
| Later Today | Three hours from now. |
| This Evening | 7 PM today, or tomorrow evening once it's 6 PM. |
| Tomorrow Morning | 9 AM tomorrow. |
| This Weekend | The coming Saturday at 9 AM. |
| Next Week | The coming Monday at 9 AM. |
Repeat starts a reminder that comes back, from tomorrow at 9 AM: Every Day, Every Weekday, Every Week, Every Month, or Every Year.
Custom opens the Remind Me sheet with At a Time chosen: pick any date and time, and a Repeat of Never, one of the repeats above, or Custom, every so many days, weeks, months, or years. For weeks, tap the days it should ring.
At a Place
When I Arrive at and When I Leave list the link's own places, then your saved places. Choose one, and the reminder rings the next time you arrive or leave. Choose Other Place or Options for the Remind Me sheet's At a Place settings:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Place | The place. Choose it from your places, search, or drop a pin. |
| When I | Arrive or Leave. |
| Every Time | Off: it rings once, the next time. On: it rings on every visit. |
| Only During | Rings only between a From and a To time. |
| Only on Certain Days | Rings only on the days you choose. |
To ring when Bindle is closed, a place reminder needs location access set to Always. Bindle asks for it when you make your first one. If you say no, the reminder still saves and syncs, and the sheet says why it won't ring on this device, with a way to Location Settings.
Bindle watches up to 20 of your places with reminders, the nearest ones. Your location is read on the device and never kept or synced. A place reminder may ring a few minutes late; that's how the system reports arrivals.
With a Device
When I'm With lists your other devices. Choose one, and the reminder rings the next time you're together. Choose Options for the Remind Me sheet's With a Device settings:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Device | One of your devices, or This Device, which rings here when any of your other devices comes near. |
| Same Room Only | Rings only when the device is in Bluetooth range. Off, being on the same network counts too. |
| Every Time | Off: once, the next time you meet. On: every time. |
| Only During | Rings only between a From and a To time. |
| Only on Certain Days | Rings only on the days you choose. |
A meeting counts only once the two devices have actually synced. It can ring on both devices. On iPhone and iPad it may ring a few minutes after you meet. Only devices in your own circle can be chosen.
When a Reminder Rings
The notification shows the link's or collection's name. Tap it, or choose Open, to open the link as the library does. A collection's reminder opens the collection showing only what's unread, with an "Unread only" chip to show it all.
| Kind | Notification buttons |
|---|---|
| Time | Open, Snooze 1 Hour, Tonight, Tomorrow, Done |
| Place | Open, Snooze Until Next Visit, Done |
| Device | Open, Snooze Until Next Meeting, Done |
Done clears a one-time reminder and moves a repeating one on to its next time. A one-time place or device reminder that has rung stays listed until you choose Done, open the link, or snooze it until the next visit or meeting.
Opening a link clears reminders that are due and keeps later ones.
Manage Reminders
The Remind Me menu lists a link's or collection's reminders. Each has Snooze (1 Hour, Tonight, Tomorrow, or Next Week), Done (Done for Now on a repeating one), and Remove. With more than one, Remove All Reminders clears them all. A place or device reminder that has rung offers Snooze Until Next Visit or Snooze Until Next Meeting.
The Reminders list shows every link with a reminder, soonest first, with collections, place reminders, and device reminders at the top. Its count is the reminders due now. iPhone: It is first in the Collections tab, whose badge counts due reminders. On iPad and the Mac, it is in the sidebar under Library (Command-5).
A small bell on a row or card shows a link's next reminder, and a repeat mark when it repeats.
Which Devices Ring
You probably don't want the same reminder ringing on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac at once. So each device decides for itself with Ring Reminders on This Device, in Settings > Reminders & Places > Reminders. It starts on for iPhone, and off for iPad and the Mac. It is never synced.
A device that doesn't ring still shows every reminder in the Reminders list, with a note and a Ring Here button. If notifications are off for Bindle, Settings says so and links to the notification settings; reminders still sync to your other devices.
A Focus can hold reminders back while it is on. See Shortcuts, Widgets, and Focus.
Places and Nearby
Give a link or a collection a place, and it shows up when you're near that place: a restaurant review near the restaurant, a museum guide in the museum's city.
Add a Place
In a link's details, or a saved collection's Edit sheet, find Places and choose Add Place. When the link mentions a place, the button says how many it found, such as "Add Place (2 suggested)". You can also add one from the share sheet as you save. Mac: Quick Add has an Add Place menu too.
The Add Place sheet offers:
- Search Apple Maps: type a name or address. This is the one step that goes online, and only what you type is sent.
- Suggested: places Bindle found in the link and its page, on your device. An address shows Look Up, which asks Apple Maps when you tap it.
- Use Current Location, and Drop a Pin.
- Your Places: places you used before, saved places first.
A new place gets these settings:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Name | What the place is called. |
| Size | Spot (100 m), Neighborhood (1 km), or City (10 km). A spot fits a store, a neighborhood a park or campus, a city a trip. |
| Map | Tap the map to move the place. |
| Saved Place | Keeps it at the top of the list when you add a place. With a Kind: Home, Work, Church, School, or Other. |
| Address (optional) | An address to keep with it. |
A link in a collection with a place is at that place too. Only the link's own places have a remove button in its details.
Nearby
Nearby lists links and collections with a place near you.
Where to find it: iPhone: the Collections tab. On iPad and the Mac, the sidebar under Library. It appears once anything has a place.
At the top, the places within range show as chips, with their distance: the places you're inside first, then the closest. Tap a chip to see only its links, and again to see them all. Collections at those places are listed under the chips. Then come the links, nearest first. Nearby has its own Sort menu, so you can order them another way.
Show Map in the toolbar switches to a map of every place you use, each with its size drawn around it. Tap one for a card of what's there. Show List switches back.
Opening Nearby reads your location. The first time, Bindle asks; if location is off, Nearby says so and offers a way to turn it on.
Nearest Sort
Any list can sort by Nearest: links with the closest place first, grouped as Here, Nearby, and No place. See Your Library.
Near a Place
When you open Bindle inside a place that has links, a note floats at the bottom of the screen, such as "Near Oak Mountain" with how many links are there. Choose Show to open Nearby at that place, or dismiss it. Once dismissed, it stays away until you've left the place. The Nearby widget shows the same thing on your Home Screen. See Shortcuts, Widgets, and Focus.
Places Settings
Settings > Reminders & Places > Places has:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Places | Every place, to rename, resize, move, or delete. Deleting a place removes it from its links and collections on all devices; they keep everything else. Add Place makes a new one. |
| Nearby Range | How far past a place's edge counts as near: 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, or 100 km. It starts at 25 km, and is set on each device. |
Bindle reads your location only while Nearby, the map, or the Nearby widget is showing, when you choose Nearest, and when it opens, to say you're near a place. It stays on your device, and no history is kept.
Rediscover
Links saved long ago are easy to forget. Rediscover brings some of them back, at the top of your library: three in the list, and in the grid a row of eight you can scroll.
It picks from unread links you saved at least 14 days ago, under the heading Rediscover, with "Unread, saved a while ago". They show as rows in the list, and as cards in a row you can scroll sideways in the grid. Tap the heading to fold Rediscover to just its heading, and tap it again to open it; this device remembers.
The picks stay the same all day, and change the next day. Each device picks its own. Choose Not Now (the × beside the heading) to hide Rediscover until tomorrow on this device. It shows only on the whole library: All, with no tag or search.
Random Article
When you can't decide what to read, let Bindle deal you an article.
Where to find it: the die (Random Article) in the library's toolbar, or Library > Random Article (Shift-Command-R). Also the Open Random Article shortcut ("Surprise me in Bindle") and the Surprise Me widget. See Shortcuts, Widgets, and Focus.
A small deck of cards bursts out of the die and shuffles, then the winner comes to the top and turns over: its picture, site, reading time, title, and a few lines. Tap outside the cards to skip to the winner. Then:
- Read (Return) opens it in the reader.
- Shuffle Again deals another.
- Tap outside the card, or press Escape, to put it away.
If you close the reader on an article it dealt you, its details open, so you can star it, queue it, or archive it instead.
With Reduce Motion on, the winner simply fades in, with the same choices.
What It Picks
Random Article picks only articles it can open right away, offline too: links with a readable offline copy of at least 400 words. Videos, books, and dead links are left out. Read and archived links can come up, but it leans toward ones worth your time: unread links, a comfortable length, links you starred, tagged, noted, highlighted, or saved twice, and sites whose articles you tend to finish. The last 20 picks on this device sit out while anything else qualifies.
With nothing to pick, it says "Nothing to pick yet. Random picks from articles saved offline."
To skip the card and go straight to the reader, turn on "Open random articles directly" in Settings > Reading > Reader. It is set on each device.
Focus
A Focus on your device can keep Bindle to one collection or tag while it's on, in the library, the widgets, and Continue Reading, and can hold reminders back. See Shortcuts, Widgets, and Focus.
